A few years ago, Jason Seligman, an IT consultant, watched dealers thumb through run lists, make mental calculations and bid at a used auction.

"I was having an anxiety attack watching them. It was so fast!" he recalled. He wondered how they knew what they were buying.

"There's got to be a better way," he thought.

What they needed was a device that could scan the VIN, pull out the specs on the car, supply the vehicle history and local wholesale value, he thought.

The result? In late August, mobile barcode scanner, VIN Viper, made its nationwide American debut.
